The Tom Maynard Trust, a charity organised by Tom’s family in his memory, is being launched next week at the Kia Oval.
As part of the launch, his father Matthew is leading a sponsored peloton of cyclists from Cardiff to London – also including Andrew Flintoff, Steve James and Surrey Chairman Richard Thompson – arriving at the Kia Oval shortly before the match between Surrey and Glamorgan on Tuesday (August 21st) that will act as the launch of the charity.
To raise awareness and boost the launch of both the ride and the charity, the Trust is trying to bring together members of the cricketing community from around the world to tweet the same message simultaneously at 11am (GB Time) on Monday August 20th.
It is aimed to get as many fans, players, coaches and organisations as possible to back this campaign, ensuring it has a massive impact on the Twitter feeds of cricket fans and raises awareness on the biggest possible level.
To get involved, please tweet the following message at 11am on Monday August 20th:
Tom Maynard was a great man and a great cricketer. Support The Tom Maynard Trust and Bike Ride: http://bit.ly/MYao3s #tmt55.
If Surrey fans and members would consider tweeting the message from any personal or official accounts they have access to – or even sending the idea around to friends, family and colleagues – it will help add hugely to the success of the Trust’s launch.
The purpose of the Trust – at this early stage – is to provide some of the opportunities that Tom was able to benefit from to other young professional players that might not be able to have that chance.
Mike Fatkin, former Chief Executive of Glamorgan is one of the trustees. Speaking this week, he said: “We are obviously grateful to all of the people who have committed to undertaking the bike ride and to everyone who has donated, especially to Brewin Dolphin.
“There have been so many offers of help from professional cricketers past and present and we’ve got a number of ideas and projects being considered. The whole process of establishing the Trust has been a real help to Matt, Sue and Ceri.”Tweet
