7 Weeks to Go – Remember 2016 in Numbers!

SAMMY CUT OUT

Published: 17th February, 2017

The countdown has begun. It’s just seven weeks to go until Warwickshire arrive at the Kia Oval for the start of the Surrey campaign in the 2017 Specsavers County Championship.

With the Surrey bowling battalion due to report back to the Kia Oval marquee on Monday morning – and after a strong end to the 2016 campaign – hopes are high that 2017 will be another good year for Gareth Batty’s men.

Whether you joined us for every ball at the Kia Oval last year, or watched on from afar, here is the Kia Oval in 2016 in numbers…

16,950 – The number of balls delivered*

Who remembers new signing Mark Footitt’s hostile spell of fast bowling when he bowled us to victory against Lancashire, footitt pngclaiming career best figures of 7-62? The pace bowler joined Surrey at the beginning of the season from Derbyshire and will be looking to start the 2017 on the front foot.

With Sam Curran completing his studies last year, the youngest Curran brother will now be available for selection for the whole season. Alongside elder brother Tom, Footitt, Meaker, Dunn, Pillans and Ravi Rampaul – you’ll want to see as many of the thousands of balls bowled as possible in 2017.

307,025 – The number of people who attended a game at the Kia Oval in 2016

Surrey, now established back in the top flight, boast one of the most exciting young squads in the country. As the Kia Oval hosts the ICC Champions Trophy – including the opening ceremony and the Final – and of course our 100th Test, becoming just the fourth ground in the world to do so, this season will be the Club’s biggest ever summer of cricket! We look forward to seeing even more of you here in 2017…

Remember when global superstar Aaron Finch deposited the ball into the third tier of the Pavilion during another carnival atmosphere night at the Kia Oval during the NatWest T20 Blast in 2016? The big hitting Australian hit the very first ball of his Surrey career for a huge six in a County Championship game against Warwickshire at Guildford and he never looked back. If you are in attendance when the Australian is back in town this season you are sure to be in for a treat!burns png

14 – The number of half centuries scored by Surrey players and 7 – The number of centuries scored by Surrey players

Was the most majestic century of the year Kumar ‘The King’ Sangakkara’s 171 on the opening day of the season against Somerset? Returning for his third season at the Kia Oval, Surrey supporters can look forward to seeing the Sri Lankan star putting on many more memorable days. Special mention also to vice-captain Rory Burns who, like his team, hit top form in the second half of the season, scoring a typically dynamic century against Hampshire taking him past 5,000 career first-class runs.

batts178 – The number of wickets taken by Surrey players

Surrey skipper, Gareth Batty, had an outstanding year for the Club claiming 61 wickets in all formats culminating in a proud moment for both him and all associated with Surrey CCC with his return to the England Test team. To tour Bangladesh and India with teammate Zafar Ansari puts the Club’s spin department in extremely good stead, especially with the arrival of all-rounder Scott Borthwick from Durham.

106 – The number of catches made by Surrey players

Sangakkara stood out when it came to catches this year, with an unbelievable one handed grab at first slip against Lancashire – much to the delight of bowler Stuart Meaker! – but it was our keeper, Ben Foakes who takes the plaudits with many fine catches behind the stumps. It was an outstanding year for the young man, cementing his place as first choice gloveman for the Club, touring with the England Lions and claiming 46 dismissals and scoring 759 runs in the Specsavers County Championship.
