Surrey lost their opening match in this year’s Second XI Trophy – away to Sussex at Horsham – by three wickets.
Batting first, Surrey lost Arun Harinath (4) and Aneesh Kapil (1) early on and were grateful to triallist opener Hendro Puchert (32), who partnered with Adam Rouse (10) to add forty for the third wicket.
The fall of three quick wickets saw Surrey slip to 67/5 but also brought PG Academy batsman Ollie Batchelor (44*) to the crease, who played excellently to anchor the remainder of the innings.
Partnering first with Miles Richardson (16), then Jack Winslade (11) and finally Academy spinner Chris Jones (14*), Batchelor’s innings enabled Surrey to post a low but competitive total of 172/9 from their rain shortened 45 over innings.
In reply, Surrey claimed the dangerous Chris Nash (5) early on, caught behind off Tim Linley and when both Luke Wright (18) and Steffan Piolet (10) also fell to Linley, Sussex were struggling on 41/3.
Harry Finch (29) and Callum Jackson (39) brought the chase back on track but when Finch was dismissed by Michael Rippon and Will Beer (5) and Jackson followed afterwards, Sussex were back in trouble on 132/6.
However, they had time on their side and some sensible lower order resilience from Ben Shoare (17), Leo Cammish (22*) and Lewis Hatchett (13*) saw them over the line to a three wicket victory.
