2018 Club Profiles: Somerset

Published: 14th April, 2018

With the new Specsavers County Championship season fast approaching, it’s time we learned a little more about our opponents between April and September.

In this series of profiles, we take a look at all the key information you’ll need about our rivals in Division One ahead of the start of our campaign on 20th April.

After beginning this series with a look at defending champions Essex and opening week opponents Hampshire, we travelled north to check out how Lancashire and Nottinghamshire are gearing up.

This week it’s the turn of Somerset to go under the microscope.

Last year’s finish: 6th (147 points)

Ground: The Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 1JT

Squad changes:

IN: Fin Trenouth
OUT: Jim Allenby, Ryan Davies, Michael Leask

Key player: Dom Bess – After Jack Leach made his Test debut in England’s winter closer in New Zealand, Somerset may have to be prepared to see less of him this summer. That means off-spinner Bess will take on an even greater role on famously spin-friendly tracks.

The 20-year-old is certainly capable of making that step up with 62 first-class wickets to his name at an average of 21.40 and a maiden century for the MCC against Essex just last month, he will be likely be a regular for the England Lions once more.

Last season v Surrey:

MATCH DRAWN – August 7-10, County Ground

Only one innings each in this heavily rain-affected match in Taunton. Aaron Finch made his only red ball appearance for Surrey in the middle of the T20 Blast group stage.

SURREY WON BY 6 WICKETS – September 19-22, Kia Oval

Career-best figures of 7-55 from Rikki Clarke followed by 157 from Kumar Sangakkara set Surrey up for their second win of the season.

Fixtures v Surrey:

20-23 June, Guildford CC

18-21 September, County Ground

Next Tuesday we’ll have the final set of profiles ahead of the campaign when we visit Worcestershire and Yorkshire on kiaoval.com.
