Alfonso Thomas has today joined Surrey as a White Ball Bowling Consultant for both the Royal London One-Day Cup and Vitality Blast in the 2018 season.
Thomas, regarded as one of the finest death bowlers in the game until his retirement in 2015, will work alongside bowling coach Geoff Arnold for both one-day formats.
The 41-year-old has been bowling coach with the West Indies since February 2018.
As a right-arm seamer, Thomas made his name in county cricket with his eight year spell at Somerset during which he claimed 137 wickets in T20 cricket and 113 more in the List A game.
Thomas, who took three wickets in his one T20I for South Africa, also regularly stepped in as captain for his county, including through to the semi-finals of the 2011 Champions League.
He also represented sides in the Indian Premier League, Australia’s Big Bash, the South African Ram Slam T20 and the Bangladesh Premier League.
As well as working closely with Arnold, Thomas will offer his experience to Head Coach Michael Di Venuto, Assistant Coach Vikram Solanki and Strength & Conditioning Coach Darren Veness, who he knows well from their shared time at Taunton. Thomas’ job is similar to the red ball consultant role currently filled by Ryan Sidebottom.
Surrey CCC Director of Cricket, Alec Stewart, said: “Alfonso will be a very good addition to the coaching team with his deep knowledge of the game, especially in the situations white ball cricket can provide. I’m very confident he will act as an excellent mentor to our bowlers and work well alongside Geoff Arnold.”
