Jason Roy and Aaron Finch at the top of the order has become a key feature in Surrey’s T20 arsenal in recent years but it was 2016 when they first gave a glimpse of their special partnership.
As two of the foremost batsmen at international level, they were always likely to take the domestic game by storm but few could have predicted this partnership of 187 in just 17.2 overs against Kent.
Roy’s 120 not out came from 62 balls while Finch’s 79 took 51 balls before he caught off the bowling of Mitchell Claydon with 16 balls remaining. With Chris Morris and Tom Curran both also going in quick succession as they tried to keep the run rate up, Surrey finished their innings on 212/4.
With a big increase in the net run rate required for Surrey to stand a chance of progression, the pair took the game to the Spitfires bowlers immediately. The fifty came up in the sixth over thanks to a range of shots from both; several making their way straight back past the bowler or beating the leg side fielders out on the rope.
The hundred arrived in the 10th over before it was cemented as a record opening stand in T20 cricket for Surrey shortly afterwards. 15 fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 193.55 for Roy and five fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 154.90 for Finch; simply magnificent.
Kent made a good fist of the chase but wickets for Jade Dernbach, Sam Curran, Morris, Gareth Batty and Azhar Mahmood ensured a 37-run victory.
It wasn’t enough to secure passage through to the quarter-finals but that combination of Roy & Finch would be one fans would flock back to the Kia Oval for over the next few years.
They’ll be back together this year; make sure you don’t miss what could be an incredible night at the Kia Oval. Tickets to see Surrey in the 2019 Vitality Blast are now on sale, with early bird prices available until the 18th March.
