Curran, Foakes & Pope in Test squad

Ben Foakes celebrates his century for England in Sri Lanka

Published: 11th February, 2020

Ben Foakes will join Sam Curran and Ollie Pope in England’s Test squad for next month’s two match tour of Sri Lanka.

Foakes, who last played for England at Test level in January 2019, will be hoping to add to the five Test caps he has to his name so far. The wicket keeper made his debut in Galle back in November 2018, scoring 107 in his very first innings to set up a comprehensive victory. In total, he now has 332 runs and 12 dismissals from his five appearances.

Despite losing his spot in the England set up, Foakes maintained form with the gloves in the 2019 domestic season – picking up 66 dismissals across all formats.

He will join Surrey teammates Sam Curran and Ollie Pope in the squad, both of whom played pivotal roles during the 3-1 series victory over South Africa.

Pope hit 266 runs from five innings at a series high average of 88.66, with his first century at the game’s highest level earning him Man of the Match in the third Test.

Curran has now made 17 appearances for England’s red-ball side his debut in June 2018, scoring 711 runs and taking 37 wickets in a valuable role with both bat and ball.

England’s tour of Sri Lanka begins with a one-day warm up on 7th March before a red-ball fixture begins on 12th March. The two-match Test series then begins on 19th March and runs until the end of the month.
