Surrey have fielded eight home grown players for this week’s Specsavers County Championship match with London rivals Middlesex, including four teenagers.
Surrey men Rory Burns, Ryan Patel, Jason Roy, Ollie Pope, Sam Curran, Rikki Clarke, Stuart Meaker and Amar Virdi are all in the eleven at the Kia Oval with Scott Borthwick, Ben Foakes and captain Gareth Batty completing the lineup.
Pope and Patel, both 19, are making their their County Championship debuts for the club while Virdi is playing his third first-class match for Surrey to the delight of Surrey Academy Director Gareth Townsend.
He said: “It’s great to see the debuts of more academy players into the County Championship team. This is reward for the hard work that our talented young players put in and the work the coaching staff have delivered over the years of their development.”
The fourth teenager involved is all-rounder Sam Curran, who before the start of play had 76 wickets and 1195 runs in first-class cricket.
The other men to have come through Surrey’s academy in the side include experienced batsmen Burns and Roy, all-rounder Clarke, who returned from Warwickshire earlier this summer, and pace bowler Meaker.
Of the three players who were not home grown with Surrey, Batty first joined the club as a 21-year-old whereas Foakes has been at the Kia Oval since 2015. Scott Borthwick is currently in his first season with the club having joined from Durham in the winter.
