Surrey’s Will Jacks has arrived in New Zealand in preparation for the U19s World Cup that starts later this month.
Jacks spent November and part of December in South Africa preparing for the competition, which kicks off when England take on Namibia in Queenstown on January 15th. Before that they will take on Ireland and Sri Lanka next week in warm up matches.
A self-declared ‘aggressive player’ who likes ‘to get on with it’, Jacks scored 71* and 54 in the tri-series, which was hosted in the South African town of Potchefstroom, as well as claiming nine wickets across four innings with his off-spin.
“The trip to South Africa was good for the team and myself to gain some confidence going into the World Cup”, Jacks told kiaoval.com shortly before Christmas. “It was good to win four games and even though we lost in the final, we learnt a lot about ourselves and what we are capable of when we play at our best.
“The World Cup should be a great experience. I’ll be coming up against the best players of my age from around the world, and it will be enjoyable to test myself against them. I can’t wait to get going.”
After the World Cup, Jacks – who won Academy Player of the Year at 2017 Surrey CCC End of Season Awards – will return to the club for his first full professional season with the Club. With youngsters such Ollie Pope, Gus Atkinson Ryan Patel and Amar Virdi progressing through the ranks at Surrey and earning their senior debuts in the past two years, Jacks is looking forward to a chance at first-team cricket.
“I’m hugely excited and looking forward to my first full season at Surrey with anticipation”, Jacks concluded. “Hopefully there will be some opportunities for me to show what I can do along the way.”
