Martin Bicknell’s Greatest Surrey XI

Published: 5th October, 2019

Legendary seamer Martin Bicknell couldn’t find a place for himself – or his brother – within his Greatest Surrey XI.

Bicknell was selected by his batsman brother Darren although neither of the brothers made it in to Martin’s selection. The bowler did concede his older brother would feature in Nottinghamshire’s equivalent team though.

With 1439 wickets to his name, the bowlers Bicknell selected were always going to have to be impressive. Seamers Tom Richardson, Alec Bedser and Geoff Arnold make up the bulk of the attack with spinner Saqlain Mushtaq and all-rounders Adam Hollioake and Stuart Surridge providing more options.

Having dominated County Championship cricket around the turn of the century with Mushtaq and Hollioake, Bicknell was full of praise for the pair claiming Saq changed the Club after his arrival in while Hollioake, who skippers his team, was the best captain h e played under. Surridge also earns his place for his reputation as an inspirational leader during the Club’s special 1950s era.

On his selection of Richardson, Bicknell cited his years of glancing through Surrey’s record books to find Richardson’s name often at the top of several lists while Arnold, who was a coach at the Club during Bicknell’s playing career, was a “sentimental choice”.

As with the vast majority of voters, Alec Stewart takes the gloves in his team. The top four is made up of Ken Barrington, John Edrich, Peter May and Mark Ramprakash. Barrington, Edrich and May are all part of the long-term folklore of the Club, with Edrich the most recent to have ended his Surrey career in 1978.

Ramprakash, however, is “the best county player” Bicknell says he has ever played with or against, as his 114 first-class career centuries will testify to.
