Morkel Reaches 50 Champ Wickets

Morkel 50 Wickets

Published: 12th September, 2018

Morne Morkel took his 50th Specsavers County Championship wicket to complete his fourth five-wicket haul of the summer during Wednesday’s play at Worcestershire.

The South African Test legend ended with figures of 5/24 in the second innings at New Road to reach the landmark in just his 16th red ball innings with the ball for Surrey.

He is now Surrey’s most prolific bowler in the competition and the fourth in the division; despite featuring in eight less innings than two of three ahead of him after recovering from an injury sustained in his final Test appearance.

Those 50 wickets have come extremely cheaply too with an average of 13.94 surpassing all competition in the Specsavers County Championship – including the likes of international bowlers Peter Siddle, Kyle Abbott and Fidel Edwards.

His first five-wicket haul in Surrey whites came during the magnificent second innings fightback at Scarborough.

Behind the eight ball at the halfway stage, Surrey needed to bowl Yorkshire out cheaply to continue their winning run and that’s just what they did. Morkel led the way with figures of 5/39 of which all of his wickets saw off one of the top seven batsmen.

A trip to Nottinghamshire followed and another second innings five-wicket haul came with it. This time it brought Surrey an innings victory at Trent Bridge.

As the Kia Oval pink-ball match against Lancashire came down to a tense final day, Morkel proved the spark. His pace and bounce was too much for the red rose tail set the task of taking the visitors home.

He claimed all of the five wickets required for victory and set off the wild celebrations that followed.

With Surrey in a similar position at the halfway stage at New Road as they were at Scarborough, Morkel produced another unplayable spell to down Worcestershire from 181/4 to 203 all out and leave Surrey chasing 272 to win.
