On Sunday 18th August, the Surrey Cricket Foundation hosted their Outstanding Services to Cricket Awards 2019 designed to recognise volunteers who work tirelessly at their clubs around the county.
Presented by our guest players the 10 awards were handed out too those who go above and beyond at their club to ensure they are run smoothly and are a place in which many people want to spend their summer at and the clubs are indebted to their hard work.
We will be sharing profiles of each of our worthy winners to highlight the work that goes in around the county, these individuals are the reason our sport is so special.
Our sixth winner and award for the Lifetime Achiever on the day was Keith Best of Churchleigh CC. Keith was nominated because:
“Keith became a member of the club in 1957 whilst still at school. For more than 35 years played as a good all rounder and captain for several seasons. However, it is his dedication to the club ‘off the field’ which should be recognised.
In 1962, Keith was elected Honorary General Secretary & arranged more than 40 fixtures a season. Later the position of Honorary Fixture Secretary was created, which Keith still holds today, this means he has arranged the Club’s fixtures for 57 consecutive seasons.
For the past 16 seasons Keith has also been Chairman with his wife Christine (an excellent tea lady) for decades they arranged ‘end of season’ trophy presentations, including the Club’s 50th anniversary celebration at the Hilton Hotel.
The club was offered the chance to play at a private ground in the exclusive estate of Greatpark Warlingham 14 years ago. Keith completed the agreement in the long-term interests of the Club. For 62 years, Keith has devoted a large part of his life to ensure the success and future of Churchleigh CC & is certainly a Lifetime Achiever.”
