Roy hammers first BBL10 fifty

Surrey & England batsman Jason Roy shone for Perth Scorchers as he hammered his first half century in this year’s Big Bash to beat Hobart Hurricanes.

Chasing just 140 to beat the Hurricanes and make it five consecutive victories in front of a bumper crowd, Roy scored 74 of them and was still there as the nine wicket win was confirmed.

Roy’s 74 came from just 52 balls and included eight fours and three sixes. That win takes his Scorchers up to third in the table with five group stage matches remaining.

Roy joined up with Scorchers shortly after Christmas having gone through a period of self-isolation upon arrival from England’s tour of South Africa.

The big hitting opener has now scored 212 runs in just six innings in this year’s competition, at an average of 42.40 and a strike rate of 126.

Speaking after the game he said: “Even though the boys got off to a tough start, they were all happy and smiling when I arrived. We’re getting the rewards for that now and we’ve got to keep that going because it’s a long tournament.”

Surrey’s Will Jacks was not selected for Hobart Hurricanes.
