Roy receives first England Test call-up

Published: 17th July, 2019

Three Surrey players have been named in the England squad for the upcoming four-day Test match with Ireland, starting at Lord’s on Wednesday 24th July.

Rory Burns and Sam Curran return to the fold for England’s red ball side while ICC Cricket World Cup winner Jason Roy has received his first call-up to the Test team.

Before this match with Ireland, all three will join a 16 man squad at the FA’s St George’s Park for a pre-Ashes training camp in the coming weekend.

Roy was named in the Team of the Tournament for the ICC Cricket World Cup after England’s dramatic victory at the same ground on Sunday, scoring 443 runs in just seven innings. His last outing in first-class cricket in England saw him score a fantastic century against Essex in September 2018.

Surrey captain Burns has been a constant in the Test team since his debut in Sri Lanka last November with 300 runs in his six matches. Curran was named Player of the Series in England’s last home series, a 4-1 victory over India and has scored 454 runs and taken 15 wickets in his nine Test matches so far.

Following this one-off Ireland Test, England will begin the five match Ashes series against Australia at Edgbaston on Thursday 1 August.
