Surrey Second XI won their second Championship match of the season by an innings and 23 runs against Essex at Billericay Cricket Club on Wednesday (May 17).
Surrey’s first innings score of 311 between Essex’s efforts of 63 and 225 proved to be enough to ensure they wouldn’t need to bat again.
Essex began the third and final day on 87/3 and were quickly put on the back foot when wicket keeper Adam Wheater was forced to retire hurt before a run had been scored. Opener Nick Browne led the Essex resistance, scoring 92, before off-spinner Amar Virdi saw him caught by Surrey’s second day top scorer Rehan Ratnasabapathy.
That began a flurry of wickets for Virdi who tore through Essex’s tail and ended with figures of 4/24 to ensure a second innings triumph for Surrey in two weeks, after last week’s Ryan Patel inspired victory over Gloucestershire at Purley CC.
Gus Atkinson (2/22), Mat Pillans (2/41) and Conor McKerr (1/66) shared the rest of the wickets with Finn Allen running out tail-ender Matt Dixon to complete the victory.
