Surrey Second XI have lost to Hampshire by seven wickets in their opening Second XI Championship game of the summer.
After setting Hampshire 199 to win on the final day, the Surrey bowlers worked hard throughout the morning session as they took three wickets – with Amar Virdi, Freddie van den Bergh and Gus Atkinson all successful, whilst seamer Ravi Rampaul bowling economically but wicketless in the early going.
Needing early wickets to create a potentially match winning wobble, Surrey were unable to make any further breakthroughs in the afternoon as former Durham captain Will Smith (108*) played the match-winning innings with support from Fraser Hay (47*) as Hampshire won the game with a six.
The Second XI are back in action next week with back to back fifty over matches at Purley CC next Monday (24th) and Tuesday (25th) against Somerset and Middlesex respectively.
