Surrey Diary: Players’ Plans in December

Published: 1st December, 2019

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! While the festive season in the UK means wrapping up warm to combat the snow and dark nights, it means sunshine and cricket in many other parts of the world.

Our Surrey players are going to be very busy over the coming month and here we’ll take a look at when and where they’ll be playing ahead of the 2020 domestic season. Fixtures for all three men’s county competitions were released last month.

England tour of South Africa

After the current Test in New Zealand is completed, England will head off to South Africa for warm-up fixtures before the serious stuff begins on Boxing Day.

Rory Burns, Sam Curran and Ollie Pope are all in New Zealand and will continue on to Centurion, where the first Test will take place. There will be three further Tests in January before three ODIs and three T20Is.

England Women tour of Malaysia

Nat Sciver will be Surrey’s sole representative as England Women face Pakistan for three ODIs and three T20Is in Kuala Lumpur, starting on 9th December. The ODIs are completed on 12th and 14th December before the T20Is are played on 17th, 19th and 20th.

Mzansi Super League

South Africa’s premier T20 competition comes to a head this month and it’s tense in the battle for the top three spots. The winner of the group will go straight to the final, on 16th December, while second and third will face off in an eliminator three days previous.

Jason Roy’s Nelson Mandela Bay Giants and Tshwane Spartans, of Tom Curran & Morne Morkel, are both well placed with the group stages to be completed on 10th December.

Big Bash League

Tom’s a busy boy because as soon as his participation in South Africa is complete, it’s straight to Australia for this year’s BBL. He’s contracted to Sydney Sixers, who begin their campaign on 18th December. It’s a mammoth competition and, if all goes well, he could be with the Sixers until the final on 8th February.

Australian grade cricket

Scott Borthwick and Nico Reifer will continue to represent Midland-Guildford in Perth while Ryan Patel will play for University in the same league. Mark Stoneman is in Sydney with Bankstown and Jamie Smith is playing for Eastern Suburbs. We’ll let you know how their weekend fixtures have gone every Monday.

Winter training

For all those left in London, winter training continues and will ramp up again as we near Christmas. Both the men’s and women’s teams will be in during the month so keep your eyes on our social media accounts to find out how they’re preparing.
