Surrey County Cricket Club are the first UK county cricket club to launch on short-form video sharing app TikTok.
The new account, @surreycricket, launches today with the intention of showcasing players and club personalities in a way never-before-seen in cricket. Kicking off the account’s output is a ‘Stare Wars’ between England men Ollie Pope and Sam Curran and a life-saving reactionary catch.
TikTok is one of the fastest growing social platforms in the world and has particularly attracted the attention of young people. The app is a phenomenon in South Asia, where cricket is the enduringly dominant sport.
Available on iOS and Android and in more than 150 markets, TikTok was the fourth most downloaded app in the world throughout 2019. TikTok creators follow trends, set challenges for fellow users and accompany their snappy videos with captivating audio.
Surrey County Cricket Club, based at the iconic Kia Oval in south London, are already one of the UK’s most popular cricket clubs across existing channels on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
Followers of Surrey’s TikTok account can expect to see different content than distributed on the Club’s existing social media channels, including behind-the-scenes footage and entertaining moments that would otherwise go unseen.
Emily Clark, Head of Marketing at Surrey County Cricket Club, said: “We are an ambitious Club on and off the field, and we always want to challenge ourselves to progress with the distribution of creative content that entertains our supporters around the world.
“We recognize that TikTok has a lot of potential to allow us to connect with a global cricket audience and showcase the Club’s values as well as our players personalities and lifestyles away from the cricket field.”
TikTok’s current sport offering includes official channels for football clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester City as well as previous collaborations with the Wimbledon tennis tournament and the 2019 Rugby Union World Cup.
