After a day each with bat in hand on Friday & Saturday, Surrey & Middlesex each batted for 45 overs on the final day of this pre-season friendly at The Kia Oval.
Surrey donned the pads first with Ben Foakes (56 not out) and Mark Stoneman (55) leading the way in the 171/4 before our visitors made 203/2 in response.
Rory Burns was the first batsman to lose his wicket on the day, edging to second slip in the second over. South African batsman Hashim Amla made a fluent 28 before he was out lbw. After an excellent first session, Mark Stoneman then lost his wicket in the first over of the afternoon before Jordan Clark followed shortly afterwards for 4.
That’s when Ben Foakes and Will Jacks, added to the squad after sitting out the first two days, combined for an effective end to Surrey’s innings. Foakes played a chanceless 56 with Jacks in a supporting role making 15 before the 45 overs were up.
Reece Topley, in Surrey whites for the first time, took the new ball alongside Matt Dunn. Clark was the man to get the first wicket though when Max Holden whipped one in the air to the jumping Amar Virdi on the deep square leg boundary.
Sam Robson and Nick Gubbins shared an extensive second wicket stand of 115 before the latter was caught after deflecting the ball upwards, leaving a dolly for Ben Foakes, on 47. Opener Robson went lbw in the following over, Daniel Moriarty’s first, agonisingly short of his century at 97.
That was the last wicket to fall as John Simpson and Martin Andersson took them to the theoretical target of 203 with 2.2 overs to spare, when players and umpires agreed to call it a day.
Surrey will now train before travelling to Bristol to begin their LV= County Championship Group 2 campaign against Gloucestershire on Thursday.
