The winter months mean no cricket is possible on British shores of course. However, that doesn’t mean it’s six months off for a lot of our players.
With England set to tour New Zealand and South Africa this winter and a number of franchise T20 leagues to happen around the world before the domestic season gets going again in April, there will be Surrey representative all over the globe in the coming weeks.
Rory Burns and Sam Curran have kept their place in the England Test squad from that which drew 2-2 with Australia this summer while they are joined by Ollie Pope, who made his Test debut in August 2018 and has since impressed in county cricket to earn his recall.
Sam will head out to New Zealand before his Test teammates for the five T20s that happen in the first 10 days of November. He’ll join his brother Tom in the squad for those games. The squads for the South Africa tour will be announced by the ECB in due course.
After that, Tom will keep himself busy by heading to the Mzansi Super League T20 in South Africa to play alongside Morne Morkel for the Tshwane Spartans in the six-team competition. Jason Roy is also scheduled to appear in that competition, playing for the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants.
Tom Curran’s T20 winter won’t end there. He’ll return to the Big Bash to play for Sydney Sixers having signed a three-year deal with the franchise back in February.
While all that is going on, Australian Grade Cricket will provide an excellent battleground for a number of our seasoned professionals and promising youngsters to keep their eyes in.
Scott Borthwick and Nico Reifer will both play for Midland-Guildford in Perth, a club particularly close to Alec Stewart’s heart after several winters spent their during the 1980s, and they may come up against Ryan Patel who will represent University Cricket Club.
Over in Sydney, Mark Stoneman and Jamie Smith will turn out for Bankstown and Easts respectively.
For those not involved in cricket overseas, the pre-season work begins in November and will continue throughout the winter.
We’ll keep you updated with the progress of all of our players across our social media channels and kiaoval.com as well as any further changes in terms of winter plans for our players such as the squad announcement for the Women’s T20 World Cup.
