Surrey Social: Straight Back To Work

Published: 11th January, 2019

With the New Year festivities out of the way, the cricket season will soon be upon us. That means our players are hard at work ensuring they’ll be fit and firing come April.

It’s not all gym work and nets though, with lots going on both in London & Surrey as well as with our players that are still dotted around the globe.

Conor McKerr is back in the country having spent the first half of the winter at home in South Africa. Straight to the gym!

Rikki Clarke has also been working hard keeping himself as fit as possible.

Ollie Pope’s been at a training camp in Loughborough this week, working on his game.

Ahead of the upcoming Test tour of Windies, Rory Burns took a relaxing opportunity to enjoy beautifully scenic Surrey.

Sam Curran also made the most of his last week in England for a while with a trip to Great Ormond Street.

Sam’s older brother Tom has been in Australia since the beginning of the Big Bash League and is enjoying lots of success. Wickets and doggies aplenty.

Liam Plunkett has joined him Down Under and will play for Melbourne Stars. He’s already taken six wickets in his first three matches.

The WBBL is synced alongside the men’s competition this year and our Stars all-rounder Marizanne Kapp bumped into India captain Virat Kohli ahead of the upcoming limited overs matches against Australia.

Aaron Finch will be Kohli’s opposite number in that series, leading Australia while wearing a retro kit from the 1980’s. He also likes the look of this fruity number worn by Graham Thorpe and Alec Stewart here.

Morne Morkel’s older brother Albie has been a decorated international and domestic cricketer. This week he announced his retirement and it gave Morne a chance to reflect on their time together.

Dean Elgar will be back at Surrey for the 2019 season. Not everyone was delighted!

It was announced on Sunday that T20 captain Jade Dernbach will receive a benefit year in 2019. Club captain Rory Burns was clearly in support of the decision.
