Bank Holiday Monday will see Surrey Stars take part in their second Kia Super League Finals Day but just how did they qualify?
Surrey Stars take on Western Storm in the semi-final for the second consecutive year at Hove on Monday looking to go at least one further than their 2017 defeat to the eventual champions.
The winner of that semi-final, live on Sky Sports Cricket at 12pm, will win the right to face group winners Loughborough Lightning in the final of the third year of the competition.
Here’s a look at each Stars group stage fixture that contributed to their journey so far.
Sunday 22 July – Lost to Southern Vipers
The first half-century from an uncapped player in Kia Super League history came from Sophia Dunkley with her 66 as Stars made 141/9. Vipers chased it down with former Stars batsman Tammy Beaumont leading from the front.
Thursday 26 July – Win at Western Storm
A first win in this year’s competition and they don’t get much better than on the road at the defending champions! Dunkley starred with the ball this time, taking three wickets, as Storm made 132/9 from their 20 overs. An unbeaten 50 from Sarah Taylor proved the answer for Stars.
Sunday 29 July – Yorkshire Diamonds match abandoned
A rare day of rain in the middle of the famous summer heatwave put paid to our second home match at Guildford without a toss possible.
Tuesday 31 July – Lost to Lancashire Thunder
95 from 57 balls for Nat Sciver took the Stars to 148/5 but Harmanpreet Kaur hit an unbeaten 34 in the closing overs for Thunder to seal the win in the first match of a Kia Oval double header.
Thursday 2 August – Lost to Loughborough Lightning
A second loss in a week for Stars with a heavy defeat at the home of this year’s finalists. With just 95 to chase, Lightning were always control and won with 10 overs remaining.
Tuesday 7 August – Win at Lancashire Thunder
Revenge for the previous week’s defeat, Lizelle Lee fully hit her straps in the competition with a powerful 70 from just 37 balls before a Sarah Taylor 51 took Stars to a 167/8 that was always out of reach for Lancashire.
Thursday 9 August – Win against Loughborough Lightning
A fine, tight bowling performance with one wicket apiece for six bowlers kept Lightning down to 100/7 in this 13 over match. Lee’s 48 and Smith’s 31 set up the win with a whopping 10 balls left over.
Sunday 12 August – Defeat at Yorkshire Diamonds
One to forget for the Stars as they were all out for 66 at York. The hosts chased down the total with just one wicket down.
Tuesday 14 August – Win at Southern Vipers
A win at Hove, the venue for Finals Day, is hopefully a positive omen for the Stars this year. Vipers relied on 82 from Suzie Bates whereas it was a team effort from the Stars in this final over victory.
Saturday 18 August – Win against Western Storm
Our third win in five matches against the only side to have reached every Finals Day so far and a crucial, nail-biting one. Contributions with the bat from Lee, Bryony Smith, Sciver and van Niekerk won the match for Stars with two balls to spare.
