Topley: I'm doing what the team requires - Kia Oval Skip to main content

Surrey bowler Reece Topley was delighted after returning career best T20 figures during Surrey’s Vitality Blast hammering of Hampshire on Friday.

Left armer Topley took four wickets for just 20 runs from his four overs, bowling in the powerplay and during the death overs, as Hampshire struggled to 138/8 at the Ageas Bowl.

Laurie Evans (81*) and Will Jacks (56*) led the chase and completed a nine wicket victory and it now looks odds on that Surrey will have the benefit of a home quarter final in the Vitality Blast.

Speaking to Mark Church after the game, Topley said: “We are on a bit of a run. The boys are playing some nice cricket and someone is putting their hand up in each game.

“Today I was lucky the wickets were in my column but there have been other guys who have had the share of the runs and wickets throughout the tournament.

“I am very pleased with the way it is coming out. I might not have had the wickets before today but I was happy with how I had bowled.

“It is important not to go hunting for these days and settle into whatever the team requires of me on that day.”

After such a fine performance with ball in hand, Topley was able to put his feet up and watch the top order take Surrey home.

That is this side’s sixth consecutive Vitality Blast win but Topley insists they won’t let up in the final South Group match against Kent on Sunday.

“Evans and Jacks were unbelievably efficient. You look at the scoreboard when we got to a hundred and it didn’t look like either had got out of second gear.

“On Sunday we are aiming to take the momentum forward to the quarter-finals.

“We are almost at the point where we are just searching for the things to complete the performance. Most games it has been the complete from the batters and the bowlers have followed it up.”
