Player Bio

South Africa Legend Hashim Amla joined surrey on a two-year contract in October 2019.

Amla retired from international cricket in August as the second-highest Test run scorer in South African history with 9,282 runs in 124 matches and committed to Surrey for two domestic seasons. This is his third stint with the Club after 14 appearances across 2013 and 2014.

The Kia Oval is a special place for Amla, who became the first South African to score a triple century when he notched an unbeaten 311 against England here in 2012. He enjoys a stunning first-class record at Surrey’s home ground, with 946 runs in 13 innings at an average of 78.83. As well as his vast Test experience, Amla also played in three 50-over World Cup and three T20 World Cups during his international career with 9271 international white-ball runs to his name. After a period of isolation upon arrival to the UK in 2020, Amla joined the squad that made it all the way to the Vitality Blast final before eventual defeat to Nottinghamshire.

Amla has enjoyed some standout moments in 2021, including 173 in the LV= County Championship victory over Gloucestershire and a 278-ball 37 not out to save the match for Surrey at Hampshire. He captained Surrey in the early stages of the Royal London Cup before a groin injury ended his List A campaign early.
