Surrey Second XI slipped to a second defeat in two days yesterday, losing by seven wickets to Sussex Second XI at the Blackstone Academy Ground.
Batting first, Surrey lost Karl Turner (1) and Akhil Patel (retired for 7) early on, but Jason Roy (47) and Tom Jewell (61) provided an excellent recovery.
However, when Roy was caught by Scott Elstone off the bowling of Rippon, only Ben Raine (58) was able to provide any meaningful support and after Jewell was dismissed with seven overs left Surrey eventually posted a defendable 222/6.
The Sussex chase was dominated by one man, former Nottinghamshire and Hampshire star Bilal Shafayat, who blasted 104 from just 71 balls. His main support came from fellow triallist Elstone, who hit an unbeaten 41 from 44 balls.
Pick of the bowlers for Surrey was all-rounder Tom Curran, whose 1/24 came from six overs at a creditable four runs an over and other wickets came from George Edwards and Tom Jewell, who once again captained the side.
The Second XI are back in action on Monday (May 6th) when they take on Canterbury in a four day friendly at the St. Lawrence Ground. Come back to kiaoval.com next week for squad details and daily reports on the match.
