FORMER CLUB CAPTAIN GARETH BATTY NOW ENJOYS A SIGNIFICANT COACHING ROLE ALONGSIDE HIS PLAYING DUTIES.
Primarily an off spinner, he draws on all his experience within the game – including nine Test Matches and ten One Day Internationals – to play whatever role is required – and is equally adept at bowling attacking and defensive lines.
He is also frequently capable of adding useful runs down the order, with a first-class best of 133 testifying to his quality with the bat. His excellent 2016 form was rewarded with a ‘second coming’ to the England Test squad for the trip to India in the winter.
A Yorkshireman by birth but a Surrey player by choice, Batty was at the helm from 2015 to 2017, before handing over the reigns to Rory Burns and Jade Dernbach.
Since then, he has worked as a coach when not involved in first team cricket; offering up his expertise to the next generation rising through Surrey’s ranks.
