The hosts, Sussex, enjoyed the best of a rain spoiled first day in the two day Second XI friendly at Horsham.
Batting first, Surrey lost PG Academy batsman Ollie Batchelor in the first over of the day, LBW to Lewis Hatchett before Arun Harinath followed suit shortly afterwards off the bowling of Matthew Hobden to leave Surrey 8/2.
However, a good partnership between triallists Adam Rouse (30) and Aneesh Kapil (61) – pictured above playing for England U19s in 2011 – helped move Surrey back into the game.
Sadly, when Rouse was caught by Callum Jackson off Steffan Piolet, Sussex continued to make further inroads with Bradley Erasmus falling for one, followed by Kapil.
George Edwards (13) played sensibly but Tim Linley (1), Michael Rippon (5) and Jack Winslade (0) all went cheaply to leave Surrey on 143/9 when the rains came to cause an early end to the day in mid afternoon.
The second day of the match is due to start today at 11am. Live scores are available by clicking here and full report on play will be available at kiaoval.com tomorrow morning.
