Laurie Evans will leave Surrey this winter having signed a contract to play for Essex from the 2027 season

The Pathway graduate has represented Surrey 107 times over two spells from 2007-2010 and 2020-2026.

The big-hitting batter has thrived in T20 cricket for the Three Feathers, scoring 2,208 runs from 96 T20s for the Club. His efforts for the county were rewarded in 2025 when he was awarded the prestigious Surrey County Cap.

Evans progressed from the Surrey Pathway to the First XI in 2009 before moving to Warwickshire in 2010. At the Bears, Evans cemented his place as one of the country’s most destructive white-ball batters. He moved to Sussex in 2017 before rejoining his boyhood club in the 2020 season. In 2022, he moved to a white-ball-only contract with Surrey.

Evans’ most fruitful season for the Three Feathers came in the 2023 season, where he smashed 563 Vitality Blast runs at an impressive strike-rate of 161.78. He scored his only Vitality Blast and Surrey century that season in a record-breaking win at Glamorgan, where his 118* was the highest T20 score at Sophia Gardens.

Away from county cricket, Evans has consistently featured in franchise leagues around the world. He won the Player of the Match in the 2021/22 Big Bash final for Perth Scorchers after his 76* helped his side recover from 25/4 to win the match.

On leaving, Laurie Evans said: “During the summer I came to the realisation that it was the right time for me to move on – both personally and for the Club. I felt I needed a new challenge and that the club needed some new energy.”

“I’d like to thank everybody at Surrey for all they have given me in my career, from when I joined the Club as a boy to leaving now.

“I’d like to thank all the coaches that have helped me on my journey at the Club and all the players I shared a dressing room with at the Kia Oval. I’d particularly like to thank Alec Stewart for being a constant mentor throughout my career and for bringing me home in 2020.

“Returning to my boyhood club for the last six years has been so enjoyable. Being awarded my county cap alongside Chris Jordan in 2025 was one of the special moments of my career, something I will cherish forever. I wish the group well in the future.”

Director of Men’s Cricket Alec Stewart said: “I’ve known Laurie since he was in our age-group pathway and at our club side, Malden Wanderers, and have kept a close eye on his career ever since.

“I was pleased to bring him back to his home county in 2020 where he’s added experience to the group and made notable contributions out on the field in T20 cricket.

“We respect Laurie’s decision to move to Essex, and we thank him for his years of dedicated service to the Club.”
