25 or under and want to write about the game of cricket?

Hone your skills and tell your stories about our great game through the 2022 Surrey County Cricket Club Young Writers’ Competition!

Every quarter of 2022, we’re offering young cricket fans in Surrey and beyond the opportunity to have their work published on the Club website, learn more about working in cricket media, interview a player and more prizes still to be decided.

There will be three age categories and two separate categories for forms of writing, so there’s chance for everyone to show off their love of the game and the written word. This competition is open to all, there is no requirement to be a Surrey Member in order to enter.

The first competition will run until 11:59pm on Thursday 31st March 2022, with the winners to be announced in April. The winners will be contacted to inform them of their success and see their work published on kiaoval.com with a full credit.

They will also be through to the final competition at the end of the calendar year, when the best piece of work in each category will earn its writer further prizes.

Writing can fit into one of two categories, explained below.

Terms and conditions: The competition will be judged by Surrey County Cricket Club staff. By submitting your entry, you give consent for your work to be published on kiaoval.com with full named credit. Entries from outside the UK are accepted. Travel to The Kia Oval will not be covered by Surrey County Cricket Club. Interview & media opportunity at The Kia Oval subject to the agreement of a suitable date for both parties. If a suitable date cannot be found or successful entrant cannot travel to The Kia Oval, this opportunity may not be available. Entries must be in the English language. Under 18s are requested to submit a parent or guardian’s contact details rather than their own. Any entries found to be submitted to the wrong age category will be disqualified. Winners will be contacted via email.

Sports Reporting

300 – 500 words of a match report, player profile, interview or news story that is relevant to cricket in Surrey at any level. If you’re submitting an interview or news story, original work will always be preferred by our judges.

Anything Else

Let your imagination run wild! Short stories, poems, graphic stories, fan fiction or anything else. Fiction or non-fiction, take your pick! Writing in this category can be as long or short as you like.

The age categories are as follows:

  • Under 16 (on 1st January 2022)
  • 16 – 21 (on 1st January 2022)
  • 22 – 25 (on 1st January 2022)
