Cam Steel shone for Surrey with the bat and ball on Day One at New Malden. The all-rounder top scored for the Three Feathers with 57 from number three, before taking two late wickets with the ball on a mixed day for Surrey
After losing the toss, captain Ben Geddes opened the batting with Ryan Patel. The pair found the boundary on numerous occasions in the opening exchanges before Geddes was caught behind down the leg-side off the bowling of Harry Podmore for a quick 27cwith the score on 39 from less than eight overs.
Ryan Patel found the boundary six times on his way to 32 before he was caught in the leg side by James Harris off the bowling of off spin bowler Tom Bevan to leave Surrey 90/2.
Number three Cam Steel and Arjun Gill added 39 for the third wicket before Gill departed, caught by Billy Root at mid-off for 30.
Cam Steel saw van der Merwe (0), Adam Thomas (4), Nathan Barnwell (0) and Yousef Majid all fall at the other end on his way to 57. Steel was next to fall though as he was caught at mid-wicket off the bowling of Ben Morris to leave Surrey 179/8 in the 50th over.
Tommy Ealham hit five boundaries – including one six, on his way to 32 before he was bowled by Tom Norton. A run later, Surrey were bowled out for 219 as James Taylor was caught off a top edge by the same bowler.
James Taylor kept things tight with the new ball for Surrey, conceding just 14 runs from his opening five overs. A breakthrough did not come with the new ball however. Experienced opener Billy Root reached his half-century in the 24th over. An over later, Will Smale reached his personal milestone.
The leg spin of Cameron Steel got the breakthrough for Surrey as Smale was trapped lbw attempting to sweep for 50.
The close of play came after the wicket of Billy Root came after 35.1 overs. Root was well caught at short fine leg by Arjun Gill for 58 off the bowling of Steel.
Glamorgan will return on Tuesday on 134/2, trailing by 85 runs with Asa Tribe the not out batter on 15 not out.
