Josh Blake scored a fine 44 before being dismissed in an unfortunate circumstance as Surrey were bowled out for 222 on day one at Woodbridge Road

Surrey captain Ben Geddes lost the toss and was put in to bat at Guildford.

Surrey lost their skipper early as Brookes found Geddes’ outside edge with a brilliant delivery to leave Surrey 11/1 in the fifth over. Nico Reifer was the next to depart as he was bowled by Craig Miles without scoring. Josh Blake scored an immaculate 44 that included some impressive stroke-making before he was unluckily ran out by bowler Danny Briggs at the non-strikers end after the Bears spinner got a finger on a Gumbs straight drive.

Tom Geffen got to 23 before he was caught at short leg off the bowling of Briggs, before McKerr departed for 1. Opener Gumbs scored a patient 39 before he fell in the 45th over to leave Surrey 133/6.

Number seven Tim Lloyd top scored with 47, as he saw Nick Kimber (23), James Taylor (20) and Barnwell (4) depart before he was the last wicket to fall as Surrey were all out for 222.

Warwickshire openers Khan (41* not out) and Shaikh (19 not out) saw off the new ball as the Bears closed day one on 62/0 from 23 overs.

Warwickshire’s second eleven go into day two at Guildford trailing Surrey by 160 runs with 10 wickets remaining.
