Former Surrey batsman, captain & manager Micky Stewart remembers his old opening partner John Edrich, who died in December 2020.
In a five-minute speech about Edrich, Stewart details the first time he ever saw him in the nets at The Oval, the determination it took for Edrich to succeed and how he made his mark at international level.

On Edrich, Micky Stewart said: “If I think of John Edrich, the first thing I ever thought of was strength.
“He was a strong guy, both physically and mentally. Everything about him was strength. He had tremendous resilience & determination. That was shown throughout his career.
“To play 77 Test matches and accumulate 5000 runs was something tremendous. John was, in my book, tremendous. I never played with a greater run scorer.
“In 21 years, he scored 40,000 runs, got a 100 hundreds and nearly 200 times in addition to that, passed fifty.
“When I was asked who would I pick to get a hundred to save my children’s lives, who would it be? I certainly named John Hugh Edrich.”
Micky was speaking at an online event held for teammates and family members of both Edrich & Robin Jackman to reflect on the life and careers of two Surrey greats. More testimonials from former Surrey players will be shared over the coming days.
Surrey Members will have the opportunity to attend a memorial event for both players when government restrictions allow.
