Surrey Women recorded two victories in two games over their Essex counterparts at Garon Park Cricket Club on Bank Holiday Monday.

Hannah Jones’ side bounced back from opening day disappointment in the strongest possible terms with a 15 run victory followed by a four wicket win later in the day.

Alice Capsey was the star of the first match, scoring 51 from 43 balls including six fours. She was backed up by Eva Gray (22*), Kirstie White (14), Chloe Brewer (14) & Rhianna Southby (13) as Surrey made 131/5.

Surrey’s fielding was the key difference however with four run outs decimating Essex’s top six batters. Two of those came from Capsey’s hand with Brewer & Danielle Gregory also completing run outs. Capsey also had a key role to play with the ball, ending the innings of top scorer Scarlett Hughes who made 46. Fellow all-rounder Amy Gordon took the other wicket caught in the field by White.

Essex batted first in the second game and made a conservative 116/4 from their 20 overs. Two wickets for leg spinner Gregory and one each for Izzy Berry & Claudie Cooper helped restrict the hosts.

With Surrey at 42/4 in their response, the second match was in jeopardy when Kira Chathli (36) and Rhianna Southby (32) put together a fifth wicket partnership of 66. They didn’t take Surrey over the winning line itself but it was a simple task for Eva Gray (3) to complete an excellent day for Surrey.
