Another strong innings from Ryan Patel was not enough to beat Sussex in the Second XI T20, as Surrey slipped to a 28 run defeat in New Malden.

Sussex skipper Luke Wright won the toss and batted first but Matt Dunn made an immediate breakthrough as he bowled both Wright and his fellow opener Phil Salt.

Harrison Ward (49) and David Wiese (78) played the biggest hand for Sussex, adding 125 for the third wicket, whilst Dunn’s 3/27 led the Surrey attack with Conor McKerr adding 3/38 as the visitors posted up 191/9 from their 20 overs.

Surrey lost Ben Geddes (0) in the first over but Will Jacks (26), Laurie Evans (47) and Patel (57) all played good knocks to keep Surrey in the game. Sadly, none of them went onto play the match winning innings required and Sussex shipped away with regular wickets in the closing overs to restrict Surrey to 163/9 and record a 28 run win.

The loss followed a thrilling tie with Hampshire yesterday, Jade Dernbach’s first game for the Club in 18 months. Surrey will play the last Second XI T20 of the week tomorrow, when Essex are the visitors to New Malden.
