Ryan Patel will captain Surrey in the Metro Bank One Day Cup this season.
Captaining the Three Feathers will offer Patel valuable leadership experience as well as an opportunity to take on greater responsibility in guiding a young Surrey side in the competition.
A graduate of the Surrey Academy, the 27-year-old has been an impeccable servant of the Club, playing some pivotal knocks throughout Surrey’s four County Championship triumphs since 2018.
Patel was also the Three Feathers’ leading run-scorer in the previous two Metro Bank One Day Cup campaigns, scoring 363 runs in 2024 and 330 in 2023 whilst averaging over 45 in both seasons. The left-hander has also showcased his white-ball skills with the bat this summer, providing rapid starts in the T20s while opening the innings with Will Jacks.
For his contributions to the Club over the years, Patel was honoured with his county cap at the end of last season.
Rory Burns has stepped back from his responsibilities as captain for the Metro Bank One Day Cup to manage his workload and focus on Surrey’s chase of a fourth consecutive County Championship title. Dom Sibley is unavailable for the start of the competition due to an injury sustained in the recent four-day clash against Durham.
On becoming Surrey’s skipper for the 50-over competition, Patel commented: “It is an honour to be asked to captain this great Club and something that I’m really looking forward to. Having the experience of the likes of Rory [Burns] and Ben [Foakes] alongside will make my job that little bit easier.”
