A torrential rain shower at lunch forced play to be abandoned for the day with Somerset 88/2 in response to Surrey’s first innings total of 286.

DAY TWO

Play was abandoned for the day due to a torrential downpour after lunch with Somerset 88/2

Surrey began Day Two on 229/7 with Gus Atkinson and Conor McKerr the overnight batters.

Atkinson – on his return to injury, quickly accelerated the Surrey score with a quick flurry of boundaries. Conor McKerr was the eighth wicket to fall with the score on 260. Dan Moriarty fell next ball, trapped lbw to Alfie Ogborne. Atkinson took the score to 286 with some big hits but eventually fell for 52 from 50 balls, meaning Surrey were bowled out for 286.

Gus Atkinson took the new ball and quickly removed Andrew Umeed for 10. The Somerset opener was caught behind by Jamie Smith. Billy Mead and Somerset skipper Ben Green took the visitors total to 59 before Mead was caught by Nathan Barnwell off the bowling of Nick Kimber for 27.

Green (35 not out) and Xavi Clarke  (14 not out) took the score to 88/2 at lunch. The heavens opened during the interval, forcing play to be abandoned for the day.

DAY ONE

Having won the toss and electing to bat first, captain Ben Geddes (33) and Ryan Patel (35) shared an opening stand of 68 from 21 overs before Ryan Patel was caught at cover.

Lunch was called with the score on 82/2 after Ben Geddes was bowled by Jack Harding.

The restart was delayed by rain and play eventually got back underway at 2:37pm. Surrey moved to 106/2 in the 32nd over when rain began to fall again. Tea was taken at 3:40pm

In the Evening Session, number three Cam Steel continued his form with a fine 70 from 115 balls and was well supported by the returning Jamie Smith (33 from 41 balls). Smith fell with the score on 143/3, and Josh Blake (7) departed soon after with the score 154/4. Nico Reifer (23) joined Steel and the pair took the score to 206 before Reifer was caught behind.

Cam Steel was caught at first slip for 70 with the score 219/6 before Nick Kimber was given out lbw for 5 with the Surrey total reaching 229/7. Gus Atkinson – on his return from a hand injury, ended the day 9 not out, with Conor McKerr 0 not out.

Surrey will start Day Two at Guildford with the score 229/7.
