Jason Roy put on a show in his first appearance in a Surrey shirt on Monday, smashing 68 from 36 balls as the Second XI beat Sussex at Blackstone.

With no first team cricket ongoing and the Vitality Blast set to begin later this week, both sides fielded unusually strong lineups with a total of 10 full internationals in action.

After Surrey made 211/7 from their 20 overs, the hosts and Phil Salt in particular responded emphatically chasing it down with four wickets and one over remaining.

Batting first, Roy and Will Jacks opened together. The latter crashed three fours before he was trapped in front by England man Chris Jordan, bringing Sam Curran to the crease who wielded two sixes and then departed for 20.

While this was going on, Roy was in the midst of his carnage at the other end despatching senior county pros Tymal Mills, Will Beers and George Garton to all parts of the ground. There were also vital cameos from Jordan Clark (33), Jamie Overton (23) and Tom Curran (26) in the lower order.

A senior bowling attack picked up wickets at one end at fairly regular intervals with Tom Curran removing Luke Wright, Jamie Overton bowling Australian international Travis Head and left arm spinner Daniel Moriarty beating Ravi Bopara.

After nine fours and five sixes, Salt was eventually dismissed by Sam Curran caught at long on for 86. Delray Rawlins & David Wiese both came and went but bowling all-rounders George Garton & Chris Jordan completed the match.
