Surrey successfully hosted their second Sustainabili-T20 match-day at the Kia Oval, in partnership with SSE Energy Solutions, as the Three Feathers took on Essex Eagles in a double header on Sunday, 6 July.
Supporting Surrey Wildlife Trust, the charity partner for the match-day, the Club will fund the planting of 175m of hedgerow in Surrey – 2m for every four and 3m for every six struck during both matches.
Launched in 2024, the Sustainabili-T20 is part of the Club’s commitment to raising awareness about climate change and environment-friendly practices as the Kia Oval continues on its journey to reach the ambitious target of net zero.
As the Club’s Official Energy Partner, SSE Energy Solutions were batting for sustainability with the spectators in the cricket net on the Pavilion forecourt as well as running a special sustainability quiz for the fans sitting in the stands.
Despite rain interrupting the action on the field, the Kia Oval was buzzing with energy, as children and adults participated in the many sustainability-themed activities on show around the ground. This included honey tasting with Bee Urban, energy biking with V3 Power Biking, virtual reality games with Bywaters and an eco-playground of life-size board games, among others.
Adam Zampa, who made his Surrey debut in the match against Essex Eagles, said ahead of the match: “It’s a great initiative that the Club is doing… If we can think about the impact we’re having on the world, if we can make it slightly better, I guess that’s all we can do.
“I’m passionate about sustainability and, as I said, a great initiative.”
Steve Elworthy, Chief Executive at Surrey CCC, said: “Sustainability is an important part of our current and future plans here at Surrey and the Kia Oval. We have set ourselves an ambitious goal of becoming the most sustainable cricket ground in the world, and are constantly searching for innovative ways to keep moving in the right direction.
“Having a special sustainability-themed match day is a fantastic way to leverage the platform that cricket provides us. It not only allows us to start a dialogue with our spectators about environment-friendly practices but also display glimpses of the great work that local initiatives are doing in our neighbourhood and in the wider county of Surrey.”
