Surrey’s match winner Will Jacks speaks to David Garrido after his 45 not out downed Hampshire at The Kia Oval.

Chasing 80 to win in a rain-affected 11 over match, Jacks hit 45 not out to see Surrey over the line with two balls to spare.

Jacks said: “There are a lot of happy faces in the dressing room, and a lot of relieved faces as well from both players and management. That first win of this season has been a long time coming but we’re very happy to have got it tonight.

“It was always going to be quite close because the pitch wasn’t the most straightforward to bat on but it was brilliant to bat with Hashim again and, in the past, I might have made the mistake of trying to win the game in eight overs and hit one up in the air.

“But, after the first over, I said to Hashim that I felt that we would win the game if I was there at the end, and he agreed so that’s what I was trying to do. It’s not always easy to do it in T20 but it’s something I need to do more often.

“The south group is very open, and this win really sets us up for the match on Saturday evening against Middlesex. If we can win that game we will be right in contention [to qualify for the quarter-finals].”
