Yousef Majid took an incredible eight wickets on the second day of Surrey’s Second XI Championship match with Northamptonshire at Dunstable Town CC
Majid took 8/97 from his 30 overs to leave Northamptonshire 316/9, trailing by 15 runs at stumps.
Surrey started the second day on 280/4 after Josh Blake reached his century late on the first day. Ahmed departed two overs into the day as he was caught behind down the leg-side to the left arm off spin of Conner Haddow. Captain Yousef Majid and Josh Blake took the score to 305 before the sixth wicket fell, as Majid is pinned lbw by Greer for 4.
Barnwell hit two boundaries but played one shot too many as he top edged a Greeg delivery to be caught for 11. Taylor and Luke Griffiths departed in quick succession to leave Surrey 331/9. Josh Blake’s mammoth knock came to an end the next over as he was caught on the leg-side boundary for an impressive 127 with Surrey all out for 331.
Northamptonshire’s openers had a lot of success early in their innings. Gus Miller (60) and Stuart van der Merwe found the boundary frequently, taking the score to 116 before the first wicket fell. Miller was stumped after some good work from keeper Josh Blake.
Yousef Majid started to get into his work from there on in. He had Sharma caught at mid-off by Arafat Bhuiyan, before pinning Halstead-Clark lbw to leave Northants 182/3.
Former Surrey pathway player Krish Patel was well caught behind by Josh Blake for 4 before Patel was bowled by Majid to claim his fifth wicket. From 14.1 overs, captain Majid had taken incredible figures of 5/42.
Stuart van der Merwe – who is also formerly of the Surrey pathway, stood firm at the other end for the hosts. He scored 11 boundaries on his way to 95 before he was stumped by Blake to hand Majid his sixth wicket.
Left arm off-spinning all-rounder Ralphie Albert continued the trend as he took the seventh wicket as Ramzan was caught in the off-side for 13.
Dom Leech became Majid’s seventh victim, as he was caught at mid-off for a quick-fire 36 to leave the hosts 263/8. Majid claimed his eighth wicket 11 runs later as George Scrimshaw was well caught by a diving Arafat Bhuiyan at mid-off once again.
Northamptonshire rallied, adding 42 more runs before the stumps to leave them 316/9, trailing by 15 runs.
