Cameron Steel and Justin Broad put on 149 for the first wicket before a late flurry of wickets gave the day’s honours to Hampshire.
The second day of the County Championship Second XI match between Surrey Second XI and Hampshire Second XI was a see-saw affair but four late wickets saw the home side seize the initiative.
Hampshire resumed on 249/4 and Surrey chipped away, Nick Kimber picking up the wicket of centurion Aneurin Donald and Gus Atkinson finishing off the innings with three quick scalps in an impressive display. When Surrey batted, Cam Steel and Justin Broad patiently and stylishly built a century partnership against an impressive and deep home bowling attack. At 149/0 it looked like being Surrey’s day but they lost four wickets in the last eight overs, meaning Hampshire left the field with a spring in their step.
Assistant coach Jim Troughton says: “I thought we fronted up well with the ball to get those six wickets. The spinners toiled away and the seamers were impressive, especially Gus Atkinson, who bowled brilliantly. We are building up his workload after injury and in his last spell he bowled really quickly; he is one of those rare bowlers for whom the ball seems to gather pace off the pitch.
“When we batted, Cam and Broady were exceptional against a really good attack. Wheal and Currie are good operators but with 25 minutes to go we were well on top at 149/0. We’d done the hard work and needed to seize that opening but it was Hampshire who did that, bowling wicket-taking balls. We’ll learn from that and tomorrow gives a chance for some other guys to get some runs on the board.”
