It’s felt like a lifetime since the ACE Programme open days in March but after all the trials of 2020, the successful scholars made their return to The Kia Oval this week.

The calibre of the players that attended those sessions earlier this year saw the scheme expanded from 16 to 24 scholars.

Coronavirus restrictions had limited contact time with the Club’s Academy coaches since then but all 24 scholars were invited back to The Kia Oval on Tuesday for a full training session.

The Surrey Academy did provide a range of activities for all of its young cricketers during lockdown but nothing can replace training alongside teammates, peers and your coaches.

There was no better setting for that than on the outfield of the Club’s home, one of the most famous cricket grounds in the world.

Gareth Townsend, Surrey’s Academy Director, is leading on delivering the programme along with full-time coaches Jeremy Greaves, Tom Benge & Matt Spriegel.

Townsend said: “We’re so happy to see the scholars return to training with us and doing so at The Kia Oval too.

“From coaching drills to Zoom calls to nutrition tips, we’ve worked hard to keep these players engaged throughout this strangest of summers.

“However, now that they’re back in full training our coaches can work much more closely with them on all aspects of their game and helping them to be the best cricketers they can be.”
