With the rain washing away the morning and evening sessions of the final day at New Malden, only 19 overs were bowled and the entertaining Second XI fixture between Surrey and Middlesex ended as a draw.

Middlesex required 312 runs for victory but their hopes were washed away by the morning rain. When the visitors resumed on 155/1 in the afternoon with more than 40 overs remaining in the day, Surrey would have felt they still had a chance and began positively.

Matt Dunn, continuing his good form, found the early breakthrough, getting N Cornwell caught at second slip by Conor McKerr for seven. This came after set batter Josh de Caires was retired by Middlesex on 64 not out.

McKerr struck from the other end, having wicketkeeper RG White caught by Stuart van der Merwe at midwicket for one.

After two back-to-back wickets, skipper Joe Cracknell (41*) and Martin Andersson (18*) saw off the threat from Surrey’s pacers and batted freely to add 40 runs together, taking Middlesex safely to 225/3 by the tea interval.

The players did not get a chance to resume the game post-tea as the rain returned and play was called off.
