S Perera’s double century and a century each from WR Michael and Will Smeed took Somerset to a towering 538/8dec on day two of the Second XI Championship match in Taunton, handing the hosts a lofty lead of 303 runs.
Coming out late in the evening to start their second innings, Surrey lost the wicket of their captain Ollie Sykes on 10 before closing on 21 for one at stumps.
Earlier in the morning, Somerset’s left-handed opening pair carried on from where they left off, adding another 124 runs to their overnight partnership of 130 before Sykes had Michael caught in the deep for 107.
One wicket brought another as Tom Kohler-Cadmore pulled Roan Kennedy’s delivery straight to midwicket, leaving Somerset 266 for two when Smeed walked out to the crease.
The duo of two aggressive batters embarked on yet another 200-run partnership for Somerset, with Perera bringing up his impressive double century with a deft paddle sweep off Yousef Majid’s left arm spin and Smeed clearing the long-on boundary for a six to move past three figures.
Shortly after, left arm spinners Majid and Ralphie Albert brought some respite for the visitors, collecting three wickets in quick succession. After Majid pinned Perera lbw for 215, Albert bowled Smeed from the other end for 106, before Majid got T Lamey stumped for two to have Somerset 475 for five.
Before declaring, the hosts increased their tally by 64 more runs, while Surrey claimed three more wickets in that time as Albert had OJ Coleman lbw and Majid dismissed BJ Church and ZXM Vukusic.
Majid ended the innings with 4/103 from his 21.5 overs and Albert picked up 2/89 in 26 overs.
Alfie Haxton (7*) and Albert (4*) will resume day three and Surrey’s second innings on 21 for one, trailing by 282 runs.
