Surrey’s Academy have had a busy start to the 2021 domestic season, including four 50 over matches for the U18 side.

Elsewhere in the performance pathway, boys sides between U10s and U15s have played several internal fixtures. The scorecards from those games can be seen here.

Here we take a look at how those U18 matches played out and the stand out performers in each.

Lost by 57 runs v Hampshire, 17th April, Ageas Bowl

An incredibly high scoring 50 over match on the Nursery Ground saw Surrey reach 335/7 in response to Hampshire’s 392/6.

Hampshire’s Tom Prest was the key difference, scoring 228 from 155 balls. George Ealham, who has played for the 2nd XI this season, took three wickets from his 10 overs. He also shone with the bat, up at number three, top scoring with 103 from 90 balls while opener Sheridon Gumbs scored 90 and lower order batter Nathan Barnwell made 68.

Lost by 3 wickets v Kent, 25th April, Beckenham

Raguvaran Aravinthan top scored with 54 as Surrey made 262 all out before Kent chased it down with 3.3 overs remaining.

Gumbs, 45, and Krish Patel, 42, also had some success with the bat. Ben Townsend was Surrey’s star performer with the ball, removing three of the top four and ending with figures of 4/45.

Won by 4 wickets v Essex, 2nd May, Garon Park

A tight performance with the ball and in the field kept the hosts down to 185/9 which was chased down with more than four overs left.

Yousef Majid took 4/20 from his 10 overs was backed up by Ealham (2 wickets) and Jilal Pervez & Ben Townsend (one wicket each).

In Surrey’s response, all of the top order got starts but it was an unbeaten 50 from Krish Patel that really took his side home.

Match abandoned v Berkshire, 16th May, Wargrave CC

Surrey made 176/9 from their 50 overs before the rain set in at Wargrave CC. As this match was in the ECB County Cup, the match will be rearranged to a later date.
