England A Tour round-up: Alice Capsey & Bryony Smith - Kia Oval Skip to main content

The England A tour shadowing the senior women’s team during the ongoing Ashes series is now complete, with Alice Capsey and Bryony Smith heading home shortly.

The Surrey & South East Stars pair have featured regularly for England’s second side, who were beaten in both the ODI & T20I series by their Australian counterparts.

The A tour has been following the senior Ashes series, which Australia were confirmed as the victors of on 3rd February, which has included Surrey Women Sophia Dunkley & Nat Sciver. They have two matches remaining in their series.

Here we take a look at how Capsey & Smith have played.

Alice Capsey – 8 matches, 137 runs, 3 wickets, 4 catches

The 2021 PCA Women’s Young Player of the Year started strongly with 44 from 34 balls in a 35-over match against the senior England Women’s team, where she top scored for the A side. She scored just eight runs in the next internal match but her off-spin did take the wickets of Katherine Brunt and Freya Davies. In the third and final internal match, she had Tammy Beaumont dismissed lbw and scored nine runs.

Another 44 followed, this time from number three in the order, in the first T20 against Australia A. She was comfortably England’s top scorer in that fixture. Scores of two, 15, 14 and one completed a long first tour of Australia for our 17-year-old all-rounder.

Bryony Smith – 8 matches, 93 runs, 3 catches

The skipper of the Charlotte Edwards winning South East Stars in 2021, Smith batted in several roles in the England A side throughout the tour.

She began at three, where she scored 18. Five innings at the top of the order followed with efforts of 25 from just 10 balls and 24 from 16 the standout moments. A number of single figure scores will have frustrated Smith however.
