With a new year comes lots of possibilities and in the world of cricket, promise of great times to come this summer.
2022 is here and that means we’re more than halfway through the off-season, with around three months until the competitive cricket in this country gets underway yet again.
This year’s fixtures have been delayed by the ECB but are expected to land later this month. As soon as we have them, Surrey Members & supporters will be able to plan their summer.
On the field
Surrey will again compete in three formats in the men’s game and two in women’s cricket. As always, Members get guaranteed access to every match within their Membership category so that’s the best way to see Jason Roy, Rory Burns, Ollie Pope, Ben Foakes, Chris Jordan, Hashim Amla and more.
Amla will return for the 2022 season as our overseas star with the other overseas players to join him to be confirmed in the weeks to come. Jordan, one of England’s finest ever T20 players and a former Surrey player, is back at The Kia Oval to captain the Club in the Vitality Blast where we can expect capacity crowds again for the first time since 2019.
We’ll also be back in Division One of the LV= County Championship after a two-year hiatus for the two division structure of the traditional competition, looking to compete for the title we last won in 2018. After reaching the semi-final of the 2021 Royal London Cup, can our group of young players go another step and make it to the Trent Bridge final?
Our women’s team will again play in the ECB T20 competition, T20 London Cup and the 50 over London Championship with some of the most promising players in the game set to feature.
The Royal London One-Day International between England and India on 12th July is sold out, as are the first three days of the LV= Insurance Test match between England and South Africa between the 8th and 12th September. Very, very limited tickets remain for Day 4 while there’s good availability on Day 5, priced at just £20.
We’ll also have South East Stars, representing Surrey & Kent in regional women’s cricket, at The Kia Oval with plenty of our own players involved. On top of that, The Hundred will return with fixtures at The Kia Oval expected in men’s and women’s cricket.
As stated above, we’ll release the domestic fixtures as soon as confirmed by the ECB.
Off the field
A new dawn begins for the Club in January, with new CEO Steve Elworthy starting this month. There will be plenty of opportunities over the course of the year to hear from Elworthy about his plans for the Club and how he can make Members & supporters feel even more at home at The Kia Oval.
Elworthy joins as the new Galadari Stand enters its second year in operation, including the excellent Members & events spaces in the 175 Suite and Duchy Suite. It also comprises of a state-of-the-art Matchday Store and one of the best views of London from the Lock Balcony roof terrace containing Sylvester’s Bar named after Sylvester Clarke.
We already have more Members signed up for 2022 than we have ever had before in the modern era with Member specific events outside of the fixtures to be scheduled in due course. The Xbox Family Zone will return in all its glory for Vitality Blast fixtures in 2022 with a host of games, competitions and player signing sessions for children under 16 before T20 matches get going at The Kia Oval.
