It was a landmark day for one of Surrey’s homegrown starlets as Ben Geddes posted his maiden first-class hundred against a Sri Lanka Development XI at Guildford.

Geddes, 20, resumed on 75 this morning and was initially circumspect against Sri Lanka’s seamers as he inched into the nineties. Finally a slashed square cut for four and a dabbed single into the off-side brought up the milestone – his first three-figure score in just his second first-class match.

A classical right-hander who is comfortable opening in all formats, Geddes made his senior debut last summer, playing 10 white-ball matches for Surrey and a single Championship game. Into the second season of his two-year contract, he has made a significant statement in his first outing of the campaign. He was finally dismissed for 104 from 268 balls, with 11 fours and an effortless six picked-up over mid-wicket.

Geddes’ departure opened up the afternoon to Surrey’s middle order, with two more Academy graduates, Nico Reifer and Gus Atkinson, both sparkling, to take the innings up past the Sri Lanka Development XI’s first-innings 372/9dec.

Reifer’s 68 is his maiden fifty at senior level, while the all-rounder Atkinson blazed away in the evening session, only to cut the persevering left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage to first slip nine shy of his hundred. He was one of four wickets for Wellalage who bowled with impressive control and stamina across his 48 overs.

Surrey finished the day on 482/7, a lead of 110, with one more day to go in this four-dayer.
