Seam bowler James Taylor is to depart Surrey at the end of the 2026 season in a permanent move to Yorkshire
Taylor, who signed for the Club in 2020, has represented the Club 33 times and taken 42 wickets so far. He was part of the squad that won three County Championship titles in a row from 2022-2024.
James comes from Staffordshire and came through Derbyshire’s Pathway system. He made his career debut for them in a 2017 match against the touring West Indies team. He also played two Youth ODIs for England U19 in 2019, before signing for Surrey in 2020 after impressing as a net bowler in the summer of 2019. James made his Surrey debut against Middlesex at the Kia Oval in the 2020 Bob Willis Trophy.
Taylor will continue to be available for selection for the rest of the 2026 season.
Speaking on the move, Director of Men’s Cricket Alec Stewart said: “Despite numerous conversations over the last twelve months, which included a contract offer, we fully appreciate James Taylor’s decision to move to Yorkshire.”

On leaving, James Taylor said: “I want to thank Surrey for everything they’ve done for me in the last six years. Signing for the Club was a dream come true, and I couldn’t have wished for a better time that has been filled with memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life! It’s been a wonderful journey and one that I’m very proud of.
“I feel that now is the right time to move away in search of more playing time. Opting for a move away from Surrey was not an easy decision, but one I feel I must make to play more cricket.
“I want to thank all the coaching, medical and support staff for all the time and energy they’ve given to me over the last 6 years. Their support has been immense, and I will be forever grateful for everything they’ve done for me! I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to Alec for giving me the opportunity to represent Surrey all those years ago.
“Lastly, I would like to thank my teammates for everything. It’s been an incredible journey and I wish them all the best for the future.”
