Surrey’s Tom Lawes and Yousef Majid have been called up to England’s Under 19 squad for the second Youth Test versus Sri Lanka at Derby, starting on 28 August.

The Surrey youngsters will be looking to help England bounce back, having been beaten by three wickets at Chelmsford in the first match.

All-rounder Lawes has had a breakthrough season at Surrey, making his debut in all three formats and impressing with bat and ball. In the County Championship, Lawes has taken 14 wickets at an average of 21.7 and averages just over 25 with the bat. He was a key performer in the Royal London Cup, scoring 318 runs at an average of 53 including four consecutive half-centuries; as well as taking 8 wickets.

Left-arm spinner Majid was given a short-term contract for the duration of the Royal London Cup and took his opportunity, picking up nine wickets during the competition. Majid bowled tightly, finishing the tournament with the best economy rate amongst Surrey’s bowlers.

Both players have developed through Surrey’s County Age Group set up and Majid is currently part of Surrey’s Academy, as Lawes was previously.

Gareth Batty, Interim Head Coach at Surrey CCC, said: “Everyone at the Club is so pleased for the lads, they both really deserve this. Tom has been showing what he can do this season and has put in some superb performances with both the ball and the bat. In the Royal London Cup, Yousef showed real control and skill and is developing into a fantastic young player.”

Chris Taylor, Head of Talent Pathway at Surrey CCC, said: “It’s a great occasion for Tom and Yousef to represent England for the first time. They’re both dedicated young cricketers who have a bright future ahead of them. This is also a credit to staff at various stages of the Surrey Talent Pathway who have worked so hard to support their development.”
